Ice cream shops in Prague

Prague is a gelato city. Italian-style shops making their own dominate, and the cream flavours come with a row of fruit sorbets, most of them vegan-friendly. Several makers run more than one shop, so the same ice cream turns up in the old town and a few stops away.

The densest area is the historic core — Staré Město, Nové Město, Malá Strana and Hradčany — with Vinohrady just east of it close behind. Many shops double as cafés with speciality coffee. Some build on milk and cream from south Bohemia, others on Sicilian pistachios and Madagascar vanilla; stevia-sweetened flavours and gluten-free cones appear too.

It pays to leave the centre. Karlín has an all-plant shop using cashew and coconut, while Braník, Kunratice, Stodůlky and Horní Počernice have neighbourhood shops and patisseries where cooked cream ice cream is more common than gelato. One Žižkov place opens for the summer only.
