Ice cream shops in Bratislava

Bratislava is split almost evenly between two traditions. Italian-style gelaterias, churning gelato daily with fruit sorbets alongside, sit next door to cooked cream ice cream sold by families of Balkan and Croatian descent. The densest cluster is the old town, around Hviezdoslavovo Square and the lanes behind it, where queues build on warm afternoons.

If you can leave the centre, the residential districts repay it: Ružinov by Štrkovecké lake, Petržalka, Karlova Ves, Devínska Nová Ves and Vrakuňa have family shops working the same corner for decades, with bigger scoops and no tourists. Bratislava is also the easiest city in the country for vegan and dairy-free flavours, stevia-sweetened scoops and gluten-free cones. Some shops open for the summer only, and a few sell ice lollies or ice cream cakes to take home.
